2026 — July

I refuse to have an artist statement.

Sometimes there is simply no way to explain what the fuck you do with your work. Or the explanation is so fucking long that even I don't want to read it. Or it's so simple that it reduces the work, fixes its meaning, and builds a prison I refuse to live in.

It might change again one day.

2025 — June

Ece Nisan Dönmez (b. 1996, Istanbul) is a painter whose work merges bold mark-making, text, and art-historical references with the raw energy of graffiti. Reimagining icons such as Ivan the Terrible and His Son, Adam and Eve, and the Virgin Mary, she layers humor, critique, and personal symbolism into her canvases. Her practice explores authority, intimacy, and memory through surfaces that are at once sacred and mischievous, confessional and defiant.

2023 — April

A period of deep questioning: what to focus on, what themes matter, İstanbul, my dreams, animals, my fears, humor, everything? and, most of all, why paint at all?

Eventually came the realization that the question itself has no satisfying answer. Asking myself why I make work is like asking an apple tree why it grows apples.

Painting isn't a conclusion I've arrived at or a decision I constantly justify. It is simply what I do.
